The cult treats the nakedness of this record as its virtue, which mistakes the fuel for the engine. Plenty of records are sincere and unlistenable. What this one has is arrangement — brass placed like grief arriving in waves, a voice pushed past its range on purpose, songs that modulate exactly when the words stop being sayable. The feeling is real. The craft is why you believe it.
