The joke is that a record designed to be ignored became impossible to ignore. The mechanism is worth naming: the tape loops are of unequal length, so the piece never repeats and never develops — it just continues, the way an airport does. Ambient's founding wager was that attention could be optional and quality could not. Half the genre since has lost that second clause.
