The founding document still sounds like a dare

What a thing to open a genre with! Not a manifesto but a fright — the loudest track first, the gentlest second, as if the band wanted to establish the full span of the permission slip before anyone could revoke it. Every prog excess of the following decade is somewhere in these five tracks, and so is the discipline the imitators skipped. The mellotron has never since sounded this necessary.
